Learning a New High-Risk Procedure?

Posted: June 19, 2024

The LPN scope of practice includes entry-level competencies, as well as a broad range of nursing competencies which may be acquired by the LPN over the span of their career through experience, education and training.

When an LPN is developing a new nursing skill that carries the potential for high-risk to clients, it is important that the LPN’s competence be evaluated and confirmed by another experienced, competent and authorized healthcare professional.

This expectation is described in the CLPNM’s Determining Appropriate Practice Algorithm (2016), and has been reinforced in recent amendments to the CLPNM’s Practice Direction on Nursing Foot Care and Practice Direction on Aesthetic Nursing.

LPN’s have a professional responsibility, under their Standards of Practice and Conduct, to only engage in practical nursing to the extent that they are competent to do so. Ensuring your new skills have been evaluated and confirmed will help you to meet this standard, and help you to provide safe care for your clients.
